If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to read the entire review, here is our summary of the Landmann Dorado Charcoal BBQ:
THE LANDMANN DORADO SUMMARY:
It’s very handy. As you can see, there’s lots of space to cook for 8 – 10 people. We put the Landmann Dorado through its paces, and it’s safe to say we’ve really enjoyed cooking on it, but what we didn’t enjoy was putting it together.
It took us about an hour and a half to get all the parts together. There’s quite a lot to this BBQ. It’s important that you allow enough time to build because this isn’t a barbecue that you’ll just be able to set up and go straight away. However, it is worth the time and effort that you put into it.
We’d say this isn’t particularly an entry-level BBQ it’s more of an intermediate. It’s a mid-range BBQ and one for those that are a little more enthusiastic about their BBQing. Someone that’s prepared to put the time and effort in to get fabulous end results, and one that your guests will remember.
The aesthetics of the BBQ had the team split – some loved it straight away with its engineered clean lines, but some initially felt it looked too structured. That said, by the end of filming everyone had fallen in love with the Dorado’s looks.
We liked the ability to raise and lower the charcoal tray to control the heat. It is super easy to use and very helpful when cooking different meats etc.
There’s lots of space on the cast iron grills for large audiences. If you wanted to slow cook and smoke a joint of meat or slow cook a chicken, the Dorado could easily handle that too.
We had this BBQ running for a long time due to our video recording, but we were able to add more coal via the fire bowl door to allow us to cook for a longer period. It’s a very handy feature and one that will come into its own if you’re entertaining lots of guests. It’s a real crowd-pleaser too – you can open the fire bowl door and get the perfect view of the flames as you cook.
With its 5-year warranty, we give the Landmann Dorado Charcoal BBQ a big WhichBBQ thumbs up!
THE SETUP:
It came in a robust, well-packaged box. It’s quite heavy, so we would suggest at least 2 people lift the box before unpacking.
One thing to note when setting up the Dorado is, that the breakdown of parts is at the front of the instructions, but the actual assembly instructions (Which you want and need to get started) are at the back – not very logical, we thought.
It does take some time to build, so make sure you have factored in the build time before ordering this – you’re not going to have a BBQ up and running in 5 mins, that’s for sure! – It took us around 1.5 hours to put together. That said, it’s worth the wait and you can watch our unboxing and assembly video on YouTube.
THE OVERVIEW:
The Landmann Dorado, Charcoal BBQ – it’s a traditional broiler style grill with cast iron griddle plates. It’s got a double-skinned hood, which allows for good heat retention, and we found it held a consistent temperature.
It has some interesting features:
- It has handy side tables, which can drop down for storage and be raised while you’re cooking.
- We’ve got the hooks on the side for new utensils and things on
- There’s a shelf underneath to store any cooking bowls or prepared meat.
- We’ve also got an interesting feature that we really liked which is a windable, adjustable charcoal tray. That means you can raise and lower the cooking temperature depending on what you’re cooking. For example, if you’re cooking something like a steak, you’re going to want quite an intense heat, therefore you’re going to want to raise the coals up and allow it to really seer that steak. But, if you want to slow cook something, you’ll probably want to drop it almost to the bottom and allow for that slow-cooked barbecue flavour with a nice gentle heat.
- If you’re cooking for quite a lot of people and you want to keep your food warm whilst you sear those steaks, there is a raised shelf to pop your food on the top to keep it warm while you’re waiting for the rest of it to cook.
- With its 2 wheels on one side, it’s easily portable
- There is a large ashtray at the bottom, although it doesn’t allow for a lot of ash to come out of the bottom, so make sure you change this regularly.
- If you have been cooking for a long period of time (as we had been during filming!) the coals start to die down a little. The Dorado has a lovely little Fire Bowl Door, which doesn’t disturb your cooking experience, and you can keep cooking for a few more people.

OUR PREFERED COAL FUEL:
A really important element to your barbecue experience is your fuel. There are lots of different types of coal that you can use – if you want a cheap quick and easy BBQ, there’s nothing wrong with going to your local shop and getting some instant charcoal, we’ve all done it! – but if you’re wanting to you’re your game up then your need to take a look at your fuel.
We opt for the Big Green Egg, 100% Natural Oak and Hickory, Premium Lump Charcoal. The reason for this is the coal’s burned for longer, there’s no nasty stuff in there to taint your food, and it gives you a beautiful barbecue aroma and flavour when cooking. Plus, it holds the heat well.

THE RECIPE:
Normally we’re cooking our own recipes here at www.whichbbq.co.uk but for this review, we had a guest appearance.
We cooked the premium barbecue box from Chefs For Foodies which contains Wagyu burgers created by Chef Ella Kotlin.
It’s a classic BBQ box using quality ingredients and exceptional, ethically sourced, organic meats from their butcher C. Lidgate. Perfect for entertaining friends and family in the sunshine.
It’s worth a mention – if you’re using the Chef’s For Foodies Box, there’s a QR code that you can scan, and it will take you straight to a page where you can see all the instructions from start to finish. There’s also a video to watch for some tips.
We cooked the corn on the cob, Wagyu burgers, sausages, and Caribbean chicken kebabs from Lidgate butchers. The meat was fantastic, the only thing we had an issue with was the kebabs – it was a nightmare to open the vacuum-packed kebabs!
Once (finally) opened, we were good to grill!
COOKING THE CHEFS FOR FOODIES BBQ BOX:
It should take about 40 minutes to cook this recipe, so we got to cooking the corn on the cob straight away – 4 very generous servings with butter.
Then we were ready for the Caribbean chicken kebabs. We used avocado oil. The reason for this is avocado oil heats to a nice high heat.
The Chicken Kebabs come pre-done, so all you got to do is pop them on the grill. The meat comes in vac-packed containers, which is fine for the burgers, but the Kebabs were a bit of a fiddle and quite messy to get out of the packaging.
The chicken kebabs had around three or four minutes on one side, then we turned them over. You’ll already smell those Caribbean flavours coming through. Just drop the lid down again, for a couple more minutes to get a good seal on the chicken.
Once the chicken has a lovely colour on both sides, move the corn on the cobs onto the top shelf.
Next are the burgers and sausages. Wagyu burgers are different as they have wonderful little pearls of fat inside the meat. People often say:
“I like my burger medium or medium rare”
Wagyu burgers need to be cooked all the way through because otherwise, you’re going to get these cold, hard pieces of fat throughout the burger.
Wagyu burgers are incredibly moist, even if you cook them for a long time.
Make sure that the burger cooking part of the barbecue is really hot and you’re going to get a nice sear on them. Nothing beats the sound of that sizzle when you’re cooking on a charcoal barbecue!
After 15 mins you’ll have some lovely colour coming up on the Gloucester old spot sausages, accompanied by a beautiful sizzle and pop!
Never prick your sausages. Just allow them to cook naturally in the skin and with the burgers, don’t be tempted to keep turning them over or pressing them. Just turn them once caramelized on one side, turn, and caramelize on the other.
Once the burgers are cooked, turn, and serve!
